God would often have his people set up a pile of stones which represented some way in which He came through for them after an event. To come across and see those stones again would perhaps elicit the same emotions we might feel during the holidays when we see the decorations. It reminds us of those times in the past and gives us a nostalgic feeling.
God was helping His people connect with Him from their hearts by causing them to remember why they could trust Him. We can see repeated examples in the Psalms of how David remembered the good things God had done which helped Him to overcome overwhelm and know God would be with him moving forward.
Paul says in Philippians 4:6-7, "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Did you catch it? Thank him for all He has done. The remembering is implicit in the thanking. The promise is that by doing so you will experience God's peace and that peace will actually guard your heart and mind - keep you sane, in other words.
When we make a practice to take time to really feel the goodness of the memory and our appreciation for God He brings us to a place of peace which in turn helps us be more aware of His loving presence.
I've also discovered something beautifully unexpected. God also chooses to remember us and loves us deeply with kindness and affection.
I'm encouraged and feel more love and appreciation toward Him remembering the ways He continually remembers me.
